Rattles and Teethers

For young babies you really can't go wrong with rattles and teethers to stimulate movement and to keep them calm when those teeth start to move under the gums.

For young babies you really can’t go wrong with rattles and teethers to stimulate movement and to keep them calm when those teeth start to move under the gums.

  1. Lamaze Baby Wrist Rattle and Foot Finder – my two loved these rattles that fitted around their wrists and ankles.
  2. Manhattan Toy Rattle and Sensory Teether – we were given one of these as a gift and I used to like to ‘play’ with it too! I didn’t realise it was a teether though as it doesn’t really look like one.
  3. Bright Starts Rattle and Shake – this one is the perfect size for tiny hands to hold.
  4. Muchkin Twisty Figure 8 Teether – I love figure of 8 tethers because the baby can practice different movements with their hands.
  5. Nuby Icybite Teething Keys – these are a lifesaver to calm teething babies, just pop them in the fridge for five minutes for some cool relief on those sore gums.
  6. Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether – I have no idea how this thing works but my two knew instantly to stick a part of that giraffe in their mouth and start chomping! It really does work, in fact Master J (at 21 months) has been chomping on a leg this week to get relief for his molars which are coming through.

Musical toys

Musical toys are perfect for entertaining babies, and for encouraging creativity in young toddlers.

  1. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy’s Smart Train – we are big fans of this train that plays great tunes but also moves along the floor to encourage baby to crawl.
  2. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Love to Play Puppy – we got one of these when the kiddos were small but it’s now really coming into its own as Miss E loves to sit and press the buttons until she finds the song she wants to hear.
  3. Hohner 4 Piece Baby Band – you can’t beat musical instruments for stimulating the senses and these are the perfect size for babies.
  4. Baby Einstein Discovery Music Activity Table – we loved these tables so much we actually had two. They’re great for learning about shapes and sounds.

Baby walkers and ride on toys are great for older babies who are keen to find their feet and start developing their balance skills. Here are some of our favourites:

  1. Fisher Price Rainforest Jumperoo – I can’t say enough good things about the jumperoo, when you need to get things done it’s a safe place to put your child and they can jump up and down to their heart’s content!
  2. VTech Sit to Stand Alphabet Train – this was one of Master J’s favourite toys when he was 12-18 months old. It says it’s suitable for up to aged 3 but he’s very tall for his age and got frustrated that he couldn’t ride it properly anymore.
  3. VTech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker – I think this is the most popular baby walker ever because all my friends bought it for their kids too!
  4. Little Tikes Cozy Coupe – we have one of these in the garden at my parent’s house, and sometimes I wish I’d bought two because the kids love it so much they often fight over it.
  5. Fisher Price Rock n Roll Trike XL – we have a pair of smart trikes, but I actually think this one looks much better. It’s the perfect way to travel to the park or the shops if little one doesn’t like sitting in their pushchair.
  6. Little Tikes Go and Grow Lil’ Rollin Giraffe – I’m a big fan of trikes and this one is small enough for young toddlers to use inside the house (if you have enough space) or outside in the garden.

If you’re buying a gift for a toddler then you cannot go wrong with Fisher Price Little People and VTech Go! Go! play sets. We have several at home and at my parent’s house and the kiddos will play with them for hours. The toys should be firm favourites for a few years to come.

Here are our favourite five:

  1. Fisher Price Little People Musical Preschool
  2. Fisher Price Little People Happy Sounds Home
  3. Fisher Price Little People Fun Sounds Farm
  4. Vtech Go! Go! Smart Wheels Garage
  5. Vtech Go! Go! Smart Wheels Train Station Playset

Skill development

Toys that are great for developing fine motor and gross motor skills.

Let’s finish up with some toys that are great for developing fine motor and gross motor skills.

  1. Fisher Price Brilliant Basics Rock a Stack – we’ve been fans of stacking rings since the kiddos were babies. To begin with they just loved to chew them, then spin them around their arms, and now they like to stack them. It’s all great for developing problem solving and co-ordination skills.
  2. Earlyyears Baby Farm Friends Bowling – as yet we haven’t mastered actual bowling with these, since the kids prefer to just throw the skittles around, but they’re soft so no harm done.
  3. Genius Baby Toys Learn to Dress Doll Bearmey Bear I love this bear because it has all kinds of fasteners to help toddlers learn to dress themselves.
  4. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Smart Stages Chair – toddlers love to mimic adults and that includes wanting to sit in a chair. This one is great because it’s low down to the floor so they won’t hurt themselves if they fall off.
  5. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Smart Stages Vacuum – Master J loves to vacuum the house with this, and it plays some catchy tunes too!
  6. These toys are great for developing fine motor and gross motor skills

  7. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Singing Soccer Ball – we had one of these balls as a gift and it is brilliant. Nice and soft so that the little ones can practice throwing and kicking, and it sings great songs too.
  8. Baby Einsten 2 in 1 Safari Adventure Gym and Tunnel – tunnels are a great way to encourage crawling, and I like that this one can be used as a play mat for a baby so you only need to buy one thing rather than two.
  9. VTech Grow and Discover Treehouse – I love toys that grow with your child and this one can be enjoyed by babies, then they’ll have a new experience with it as they learn to sit, and then to stand.
  10. Fisher Price Cruise and Groove Ballapalooza – we bought this as a first birthday present and it has been money well spent. At the time both kiddos were learning to walk and this structure is sturdy enough for them to pull themselves up on and it not topple over. It is also great for developing problem solving and co-ordination skills.
  11. Earlyyears Roll ’n Swirl Ball Ramp – if you don’t have enough room for a ballapalooza then this ball ramp looks like a lot of fun too.
  12. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Creative Case for iPad – I never planned to let my toddlers play with an iPad but there are some great apps and I’ve been surprised at how quickly they have learned to operate it. This case gives me piece of mind that my precious tablet is protected while they play.
