Wonderful books about the ocean

Over in the Ocean: In a Coral Reef

Over in the Ocean: In a Coral ReefOver in the Ocean: In a Coral ReefThis book combines 11 verses of engaging rhyme with eye-popping artwork that is sure to engage your child as you both explore the creatures that live over in the ocean.

It’s suitable for toddlers, but children of six or seven will enjoy reading this book too.

Here’s the rhyme for the number two:

Over in the ocean Where the sea grasses grew Lived a mother parrotfish And her parrotfish two. “Grind,” said the mother. “We grind,” said the two. So they ground on the coral Where the sea grasses grew.”

And so it goes for each number from 1 through 10, with every verse starting with, “Over in the ocean….”

The eleventh verse is a wrap-up where the reader has to find all 55 young animals in the two-page spread (1 octopus, 2 parrotfish, 3 clownfish and so on), in a fashion that is similar to the I Spy books.

You might want to buy two copies of this book as it will make an amazing gift as well as forming a wonderful base to a unit study about the ocean.

Citizens of the Sea: Wondrous Creatures From the Census of Marine Life

Citizens of the Sea: Wondrous Creatures From the Census of Marine LifeCitizens of the Sea: Wondrous Creatures From the Census of Marine Life

Having Google at our fingertips has changed the way we learn about the world around us.

But nothing beats having a beautifully illustrated encyclopaedia to browse through during quiet time or just before bed.

Citizens of the Sea: Wondrous Creatures From the Census of Marine Life is the perfect addition to your library.

The photographs are simply stunning and your child will learn about the amazing world under our oceans with information like the incredible distances that seabirds and other species cover and how some feed in both Arctic and Antarctic waters within a single year.

They will also begin to understand the almost inconceivable number of creatures in the marine world.

Did you know that from the bounty of microbes in one drop of seawater, we can calculate that there are more individuals in the oceans than stars in the universe?

This book will become a firm favourite for children as young as three right through to the teenage years. In fact you might find that grandpa loves reading it so much it would make the perfect gift for him too!
